Polymyxin B for Injection IP 750000 IU is a potent bactericidal antibiotic used in the treatment of serious lifethreatening infections caused by multidrugresistant Gramnegative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae

Polymyxin B belongs to the polymyxin class of antibiotics and works by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane leading to cell death This formulation is supplied as a lyophilized powder for intravenous or intramuscular administration after reconstitution

Indications:

Severe infections caused by susceptible Gramnegative bacteria

Ventilatorassociated pneumonia VAP

Bloodstream infections BSI

Urinary tract infections UTIs

Intraabdominal infections

Meningitis offlabel as per physicians guidance

Use as part of lastresort therapy for multidrugresistant organisms MDROs

Can be administered IV or IM depending on indication

Dosage  Administration:

Route Intravenous preferred or intramuscular if IV not feasible

Loading dose IV 2025 mgkg body weight approx 1500020000 IUkg

Maintenance dose 12515 mgkg approx 1250015000 IUkg every 12 hours

Dilution Reconstitute with sterile water for injection and further dilute with appropriate IV fluid

Administration Infuse over 6090 minutes

Note: Dosage must be adjusted in patients with renal impairment

Storage: Store below 25C in a dry place

Protect from light

Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or stored as per manufacturers instructions

Keep out of reach of children

Warnings  Precautions:

Nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity are potential risksmonitor kidney function regularly

Avoid concurrent use with other nephrotoxic drugs

Use only under strict medical supervision especially in critically ill patients

Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to polymyxins
